Speech and language therapy consultation
Speech and language development is one of the key areas of a child's development. It encompasses not only the production of words, but also language comprehension, the ability to respond to communication, and the functioning of the speech organs and functions related to eating, breathing and swallowing.
A speech and language therapy consultation makes it possible to assess a child's speech development in the context of nervous system functioning and the efficiency of the articulatory apparatus. This allows for an understanding of whether difficulties in communication are developmental, functional in nature, or require further assessment.
At Równoważni MED we look at speech development holistically — taking into account linguistic, neurological, sensory and emotional aspects alike.

When is it worth referring a child to a speech and language therapist?
A speech and language therapy consultation may be helpful when a child presents with:
- delayed speech development or absence of speech
- limited vocabulary
- difficulties constructing sentences and expressing thoughts
- problems understanding speech and instructions
- incorrect articulation (e.g. lisping, rhotacism)
- fluency disorders (e.g. stuttering)
- difficulties with communication and making contact
- mouth breathing, drooling
- difficulties with biting, chewing or swallowing
- concerning tension in the facial area and oral cavity
A consultation is also indicated for children:
- born prematurely
- following a difficult birth
- with a diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. ADHD, autism spectrum)
- with difficulties in learning to read and write
What does a speech and language therapy consultation involve?
The consultation includes a parental interview and an assessment of the child's functioning in the area of speech and communication.
Parental interview
During the conversation, the specialist gathers information about:
the course of pregnancy and birth
the child's development
the child's everyday communication
difficulties observed by the parents
Assessment of the child's functioning
During the appointment, the speech and language therapist assesses, among other things:
articulation and pronunciation of sounds
speech comprehension
sentence construction
vocabulary
linguistic and communicative functions
the functioning of the articulatory organs (tongue, lips, palate)
breathing and swallowing patterns
muscle tone in the facial area
The assessment takes place through conversation, observation during play and tasks adapted to the child's age and abilities.
How can a speech and language therapy consultation help?
The consultation makes it possible to:
determine the level of the child's speech development
identify the causes of difficulties
plan further therapeutic support
select appropriate forms of work with the child
provide parents with concrete guidance for everyday functioning
In many cases, early diagnosis can significantly accelerate speech development and prevent further difficulties.
