Confidence training (CT)

Some children find their place in a peer group with ease; others more frequently experience difficulties in relationships, withdrawal or a lack of self-belief.

Confidence training is a workshop programme for children and adolescents that helps develop self-esteem, social skills and the ability to cope in difficult peer situations.

What does confidence training involve?

Confidence training is a cycle of workshops held in small peer groups, in a safe and supportive atmosphere. During the sessions, children learn, among other things:

  • recognising and naming emotions
  • building self-esteem
  • expressing their needs and opinions
  • responding to teasing and peer pressure
  • assertiveness and setting boundaries
  • cooperation and communication within a group

Sessions take a workshop format — using exercises, role-play scenarios, pair work and group discussion.

This allows children to safely practise new skills in practice.

The important role of parents

An important element of the programme is the workshops for parents.

During the sessions, parents:

  • learn about the difficulties children face in peer relationships
  • discover ways to support their child in building confidence
  • learn how to respond to conflicts and peer bullying
  • receive guidance on strengthening their child's social competencies in everyday life

Parental involvement significantly increases the lasting impact of the training.

Age groups

The programme is intended for children and adolescents aged 7–14.

Participants are placed in age-matched groups to ensure a comfortable working environment and an appropriate level of difficulty in the exercises.

How can I tell whether my child needs confidence training?

Confidence training can be helpful for children who have difficulty forming relationships with peers, feel uncertain in a group or struggle to express their own opinion. The programme is particularly recommended for children who have experienced rejection or peer bullying, have difficulty setting boundaries or frequently withdraw from social contact.

What do the sessions look like during confidence training?

Sessions take the form of workshops and take place in small peer groups. Children take part in exercises, role-play scenarios and discussions that help develop social skills, build self-esteem and learn how to respond in difficult group situations.

Why do parents also participate in the programme?

An important element of the programme is supporting parents in the process of building their child's confidence. During the workshops, parents learn how to respond to difficult peer situations, how to support their child in developing self-esteem and how to reinforce new skills in everyday life.
